S5 E5 - World Building

Outro S5 E5

Hello my survivor friends.  Thank you for showing up and allowing me to fill your ears with the sweet, honeyed, molasses of the apocalypse.

I’ll give you a couple quick updates and let you go.

We have 530 members of our Facebook group and there is some fun meme posting going on.

If you are listening to these shows I n real time it is November of 2024 and I am celebrating a birthday.  Happy birthday to me! To misquote Marie Antoinette – “Let them eat birthday cake!”

I had three big goals for the summer just past.

First to train and run a trail 100K race, which was right on track until I took a digger in the woods and broke my shoulder six weeks ago.  It’s healing nicely, but I have to stay out of the trails for a few months.

Second, in support of the first, was to lose a bunch of weight, which I’m happy to report I did.  I worked with my nutrition coach – Rachel – and have been at my goal weight for a couple moths.

Third, was to get book one – the manuscript of the first season published.  This one has been the most challenging – but I’m going to give it a provisional win!  It’s not as simple as taking the existing manuscript and publishing it.  Because of the way I write the show, especially in the first season when I was figuring the story and the characters out, one chapter at a time, one episode at a time, because of that there were a lot of things I needed to cleanup structurally and that took longer than I thought it would.

But! I shipped the finished manuscript off to a copy editor last week and should have the completed manuscript back soon.  Then I just need to format the front and back matter, do some other odds and ends, and it becomes a published book that you can buy.

I have already sent the second season manuscript in for structural editing and my loose goal is to get a new one out every 3-6 six months.

Anyhow – look for that coming your way soon.

What has Chris been reading?

I just finished Eugene J. McGillicuddy’s Alien Detective Agency by George Allen Miller.  If you listened to the between season interviews over the summer you will recognize that I interviewed the author.

When he said he was really into world building, he wasn’t kidding.  I enjoyed it.  I liked the characters, I liked the humor and the detective noir comic nature.  It was a lot of world building.

And I guess some people really enjoy that part.  For me I could have used less world building and more focus on the narrative.

It reminds me of the Neil Stevenson book Seveneves, which some people loved, but I found the endless descriptions of how stuff works really slowed me down and didn’t add to the narrative.

I’ll leave it there for today.  I am pushing myself to get the 5th season done so I can focus more on the mechanics of publishing.

But to those of you listening and bingeing you won’t even notice!

So, my survivor friends, let’s try to manage our petrol usage so we can keep the bunker fans rotating enough to push the nuclear fallout dust away.

And keep surviving.
